Ham & Cheese Sliders

This quick and easy party food has become one of my most-requested dishes lately.  Which is completely fine by me, because there’s nothing better than a party food that goes together in no time, makes virtually no mess and can be made in advance.  And, they’re fabulous.

This picture does not do these sandwiches justice because I had to photograph them before they were finished so I wasn’t taking pictures of my food during the party=).  They are gooey, melty, buttery little bites of yumminess.  I prefer to use Virginia Ham and sliced Provolone from my deli counter, but you can use any meat and cheese combo that you like.    For parties, I like to use Egg &Butter or Hawaiian rolls, but if I’m making them for lunch or a quick dinner, I like to use bigger bakery rolls like a Kaiser or even a hamburger bun.

I don’t like a lot of meat on my sandwiches, so I usually just use one slice of ham but you can of course adjust to your taste.  I also use one slice of cheese, but if they are really big slices I’ll sometimes tear them in half.  If you make them in advance, be sure to cover them tightly with aluminum foil and store them in the refrigerator.  I wouldn’t suggest buttering the rolls until right before you put them in the oven, but I’ve done it both ways so if you’re really in a pinch, butter them in advance, too.  I just think they’re better when they’re freshly-buttered.

Make these!  And enjoy!

Ingredients (adjust quantities to meet your needs)
12 Egg & Butter rolls
12 slices Virginia Ham, thinly sliced
12 slices Provolone Cheese
Mayonnaise

For glaze:
1/2 stick unsalted butter
1 teaspoon dried onions
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire
1 Tablespoon Mustard
1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds

Slice rolls in half.  Spread Mayo on the top and bottom of the roll. (don’t be stingy, folks.  This is clearly not health-food.)  Place a slice of ham on the bottom of the roll, and top with cheese, then replace the top of the roll.  Place sandwiches on a large, aluminum foil or silpat-mat lined cookie sheet.

To prepare glaze, melt butter in microwave in a small dish.  (I use my measuring cup.)  Whisk in onions, Worcestershire, mustard and poppy seeds.  Using a pastry brush, generously brush each sandwich with butter mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted.  If the sandwiches start to over-brown, cover with foil.

Enjoy!
