There’s just something magical about the kitchen. Since following GE Appliances‘ Our American Kitchen stories, I’ve been really aware of how important the kitchen is in the American family life. Just tonight, my extended family (all 20 of us) were jammed into my parent’s kitchen for Sunday dinner. This morning, my girls woke me up begging for our Sunday morning waffle breakfast. Last night, my girlfriends and I gathered in a friend’s new kitchen over appetizers and cocktails.
There’s something about a kitchen. I thought maybe it was the food, but I don’t think it is. I think it’s about ritual, comfort, family… when I wake up in the morning, I head to the kitchen. Before I go to bed at night, I tidy up the kitchen and start the dishwasher. The hum of the dishwasher is familiar, soothing, and just sounds like home. A dishwasher makes me feel that way, you guys! But there’s more. My blog was born in my kitchen. Weeknight family dinners of simple meals like spaghetti, meatloaf and chili are nostalgic but routine and you better bet that at 7pm on a night a home, my family will all be gathered around the kitchen island. My kitchen is the CENTER of my home.
This video about Maryann, the Cookie Lady (who is totally adorable) shows how she has spent her life in the kitchen, making people happy – making people cookies! Have a look:

I learned to cook sitting on the Kitchen counter top of my grandmother’s kitchen. My kitchen isn’t just a kitchen. It is the family gathering place, office, mail room, classroom, hobby/project space, and the main entrance point of my house.

The kitchen is, was and always will be the heart of my home. Family coming together for special occasions and everyday life occur in my kitchen. My dad taught me to cook in our kitchen growing up and I plan to teach my girls to cook in my kitchen some day.

An American kitchen to me means a place where your friends and family can gather while sharing stories and recipes involving food. It is where I am able to sit my three year old who is very curious on what is being made and allow him to help in the creative process to feed our bellies.

To me, the American Kitchen refers to the heart of every home. Families all over America gather together, share great food, cook together, entertain friends and family, work on homework with their kids, and so much more every single day right in the kitchen. American Kitchen=Love.

American Kitchen: First light, coffee pot, bare feet, clean dishes, cupboard doors opening and closing, frying pan, vent on, “Mom Where’s My…?”, multitasking, lunches made, out of milk, list on fridge, dirty dishes piled in sink.
Lunch time silence, breakfast dishes, sunny windows, sunlight highlights dirty floors, sweeping, mopping, pull chicken from freezer, check cupboards, mentally chide husband for not adding things to shopping list, check recipes, check spices, note to self:clean out the spice drawer.
Home from school, snack at kitchen counter, homework at kitchen desk while dinner simmers, husband home, glass of wine, chopping vegetables, dinner, laughter, family, child clears table, husband loads dishwasher but never remembers to wipe the counters, child in bed, hum of dishwasher, clean counters, mug of tea, lights out, goodnight kitchen.

The kitchen to me is the place for our family to share the happenings from our days along with meals and games. It’s also a great learning environment, some people don’t realize how much math goes into cutting recipes. We spend a great portion of our day just hanging around in the kitchen, mostly because that’s where the cookies are!
